Trusted Local Concrete Professionals in Smithfield
Smithfield is a regular stop for us, about 35 minutes from our base in Wilson down 264 and 70. Driveway replacements in the older streets around the courthouse and Riverside, patios and slabs in the newer subdivisions off Buffalo Road and Booker Dairy, and a fair amount of commercial pad and repair work along the 70 and Outlet Center corridor.
Concrete work in Smithfield, from the courthouse blocks to Buffalo Road
Smithfield splits into two kinds of concrete job. In town, around the courthouse, Brightleaf and Riverside, the houses are older and so is the concrete. A lot of it is thin, unreinforced, poured straight onto grade in the fifties or earlier, and it has reached the end of a long life. That work is tear out and repour, usually with tight access and mature trees in the way.
Out along Buffalo Road, Booker Dairy and toward Wilsons Mills, the subdivisions are newer and the problem is different: engineered fill that has been settling since the builder left, and driveways poured thin for the loads people actually put on them. We check the subgrade before we quote either one, because it decides the whole job.

What we get called for most in Smithfield
Settlement in newer subdivision fill
The neighborhoods off Buffalo Road and Booker Dairy were built on pads that were cut and filled to get level lots. Fill that was not placed in compacted lifts keeps consolidating for years, and the driveway or patio poured on it drops at one corner. We excavate through the soft material and rebuild with compacted stone rather than pouring back onto it.
Worn-out slabs in the older streets
Around the courthouse, Holding Street and Riverside, a lot of the original walks, drives and porch slabs are 60 to 80 years old with no steel and no base. The surface is spalling, the panels have moved, and the whole thing is thinner than anything you would pour today. Patching those is money spent twice.
Neuse River bottom and low-lying ground
Anything down toward the river, along the low ground behind Riverside or out in the flood fringe has a higher water table and softer subgrade than a lot two streets up. That changes base depth and sometimes the slab thickness, and it is the kind of thing we would rather find at the estimate than on pour day.
What the ground and the weather do to concrete here
These are the four things that decide how we build a slab in Smithfield. Figures are typical for the area and are confirmed on site before we quote.
The town we are pouring in
Smithfield is the Johnston County seat and it has grown up around that. The courthouse blocks and Brightleaf Boulevard are the old town, close-built with narrow drives, shallow setbacks and big trees, which means access matters as much as square footage on a lot of jobs.
The Neuse River runs right past downtown and it shapes what we do near it. Riverside, the ground behind the park, and the low ground toward Wilsons Mills all sit closer to the water table than the ridge along 70. We look harder at base depth and drainage on those addresses.
Then there is the growth. The Outlet Center corridor, the medical campus and the subdivisions pushing out toward Clayton have added a lot of newer construction, which brings a different set of problems: fill settlement, thin builder-grade slabs and drainage that was graded for the whole subdivision rather than for your lot.
