Concrete Pool Decks in Wilson, NC
A pool deck is the one slab that is permanently wet, walked on barefoot, and full of things people trip over. It has to grip when it is soaking, drain away from the water instead of into it, and stay cool enough to stand on in August. That is a finish and a drainage decision, and we make both before the forms go in.
Slip resistance and drainage decide a pool deck, then everything else
Water leaving the deck should never go into the pool. Splash-out, rain and hose water all carry dirt, sand and lawn chemicals, and a deck pitched the wrong way sends every bit of it into the water and onto your filter. We pitch away from the coping and pick up the runoff at the outside edge or in a strip drain.
The finish is the other half. Barefoot traffic on a wet surface needs texture, and light color keeps the surface temperature down. We use a broom or textured stamp with a light integral color or hardener, and a matte sealer with grit rather than anything glossy.
- Pitched away from the coping across the whole deck
- Slip-resistant broom or textured finish, barefoot tested
- Light color to keep surface temperature down
- Expansion joint at the coping so pool and deck move apart
- Compacted stone base over backfilled pool surround soil
- Drain or daylighted edge for splash-out and rain

Everything a pool deck pour takes
From removing the old deck to the first seal coat, with the pool protected the whole time.
Demolition and haul off
Old deck or pavers broken out and removed with the pool covered and protected from debris.
Base over backfill
Pool surround soil is backfill and it keeps settling. It gets excavated and rebuilt with compacted stone.
Forms and reinforcement
Forms set around the coping line, with mesh or rebar carrying the deck across soft backfill.
Drainage design
Pitch away from the pool, plus a strip drain or a daylighted edge where the grade does not carry water off.
Slip-resistant finish
Broom or textured stamp finish, light color, tooled edges, and a matte sealer with grit additive.
Coping and equipment details
Expansion joint at the coping, plus clean cut-ins around skimmers, returns, lights and equipment pads.
How we build your concrete pool deck
On-site estimate
We look at the coping, the existing pitch and where water is going now, then price the deck in writing.
Demo and base
Old deck removed with the pool protected, backfill excavated, stone base spread and compacted.
Forms and steel
Forms set to the coping and the finished grade with fall away from the water, reinforcement tied.
Pour, finish, seal
Continuous pour, slip-resistant finish, expansion joint at the coping, then cure and the first seal coat.
Signs the deck around your pool is done
Around a pool, a small defect is a safety problem before it is a cosmetic one.
Settled sections at the coping
The soil around a pool is backfill. When it consolidates the deck drops and leaves a lip right where people walk out of the water.
Water draining into the pool
If rain and splash-out run back toward the coping you are washing dirt and lawn chemicals into the water constantly.
A slick or polished surface
Worn texture, algae in low spots or a glossy sealer on a wet deck is the most common way people get hurt around a pool.
Too hot to stand on
A dark or heavily sealed deck can run twenty degrees hotter than a light textured one on a July afternoon.
Cracks at the coping joint
The deck and the pool shell move independently. Without a working expansion joint the deck cracks along the coping.
Spalling and exposed aggregate
Pool chemicals and constant wet-dry cycling take the top off a slab, and once the stone shows it only goes faster.
Why the slab around a pool moves first
When the pool went in, a hole much larger than the shell was dug and then backfilled. That fill was rarely compacted in lifts, and it keeps consolidating for years. A deck poured on it without excavation and a proper stone base drops at the coping, which is exactly where you do not want a lip.
Water and chemistry attack the surface. A pool deck is wet and dry several times a day in season, splashed with chlorinated or salt water, and hit with lawn fertilizer and de-icer. That is a harder life than any other slab on the property, and a slab without a decent finish and a maintained sealer gives up its surface first.
Then movement at the coping. The pool shell and the deck are two different structures on two different footings, and they do not move together. If the joint between them is caulk-filled, functional and maintained, that movement is fine. If somebody poured the deck tight to the coping, the deck cracks there and water gets behind the tile.

What moves the price of a pool deck
Pool decks are shape-heavy and detail-heavy, which is where the cost sits.
Size and shape
A wide deck around a rectangular pool is the least per foot. Freeform pools, curved edges and narrow walk-arounds are all perimeter, which is all hand work.
Removal and base rebuild
Taking out an old deck or pavers with the pool in place is careful work, and rebuilding settled backfill takes more excavation and stone than a normal slab.
Finish choice
Broom finish with a light integral color is the value option. Textured stamp, broadcast hardener or a banded border each add finishing time.
Drainage work
If the yard does not carry water away, a strip drain, catch basins and a piped outfall are priced as their own line.
The estimate lists the finish, the color, the sealer, the pitch and the drainage plan, plus how we protect the pool and equipment during demolition and the pour.
